PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (b. 1720, Mestre, d. 1778, Roma) |
The Ponte Solario1756-57Etching National Gallery of Art, Washington | |
This splendid etching inspired Hubert Robert's painting of The Ponte Solario. Piranesi emphasized the bulk of the architectural monument which has an almost sinister appearance. The etching was part of Piranesi's 'Vedute di Roma.' |
