The picture shows the head of Isaiah, one of the statues on the façade of the Cathedral of Siena. Giovanni Pisano knew that the figures would be seen from a good distance below, so he dramatically exaggerated their poses and carving, and positioned them to lean forward into space. In the figure of Isaiah, for example, he peppered the prophet's beard with numerous drill holes which enhance the dramatic play of light and shadow across and around the face.
