Virgin and Child with Saints

c. 1300
Marble, height 180 cm
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Pisa

The marble statues of Virgin and Child between Sts John the Evangelist and John the Baptist with a donor come from the external lunette of the main portal of the Baptistery of Pisa. They are now exhibited in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Pisa.

The Virgin has a grand, simplified form, suited to its position and distant viewing point. The draperies are animated by the contrasting eddies of deep folds, centering on the Virgin's hand on the mantle and the child, held with a powerful, twisting movement.
