PISANO, Andrea

South doors panels: 18. Salome takes the head to Herodias

1330
Gilded bronze
Baptistery, Florence

Each door contains 10 scenes in the upper section from the life of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence to whom the Baptistery is dedicated. The picture shows one of the scenes on the right door.

Giotto's frescoes in the Peruzzi Chapel in Santa Croce are fundamental for Andrea's figurative style. One of the most Giottesque of the reliefs is "Salome takes the head to Herodias", where the setting and poses alike derive from the Peruzzi Chapel.
