This relief is one of the seven 'discoverers of the crafts' in the lower register of the socle of the Campanile, of which three are on the south side.
On this relief an old man is sitting at a desk and is gazing up towards the heavens with a quadrant. He is generally called Gionitus, who can be identified as Jonitus, the fourth son of Noah who, according to Methodius (a martyr), was born after the deluge and who was supposedly the inventor of astronomy.
This relief was executed by a collaborator of Andrea Pisano, called the Master of Armour.
