This relief is one of the seven 'discoverers of the crafts' in the lower register of the socle of the Campanile, of which three are on the south side.

In Greek mythology, Daedalus was a skillful architect and craftsman, and was seen as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and power. He is the father of Icarus.
