This relief is one of the seven hexagonal panels in the lower register of the socle on the north side of the Campanile. It depicts Sculpture, represented by Phidias.
The representation of Sculpture marks a turning point in Andrea's stylistic evolution. It is more monumental than the preceding reliefs, with its sculptor placed against a neutral but coherent background. This Classical trait is echoed in the figure he is carving, an "antique" male nude in the round. Tools of the sculptor's trade are casally depicted - the hammer, drill, compass and, significally, a book.
