PISANO, Andrea
(b. ca. 1290, Pontedera, d. ca. 1348, Orvieto)

Christ

c. 1340
Marble, height 75 cm
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence

The task of producing the bronze doors took Andrea Pisano to the limits of his goldsmith's art, which may explain why in 1333-34 he extended his range into the realm of monumental sculpture. His early pieces in marble, however, still show the signs of work with soft wax: a small statue of the Virgin and Child (Bode Museum, Berlin) and the statues of Christ and St Reparata (Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence).
