The theme of the Annunciation was particularly popular in Italy in the 14th century. Nino Pisano executed several monumental groups representing this scene, where the Angel presents himself before the Virgin. The angel of Cluny, whose pendant is perhaps a Virgin kept in the Louvre, presents all the qualities of this sculptor: sense of monumentality, search for suppleness and harmony in the drapery, attention to the naturalness of the gestures and to the softness of the faces.
