The theme of the Annunciation was particularly popular in Italy in the 14th century. Nino Pisano executed several monumental groups representing this scene, where the Angel presents himself before the Virgin. The figures of the Virgin in the Louvre and the Angel in Cluny are considered to be part of a group which is related to that, in marble, in the Church of Santa Caterina in Pisa.
