Tommaso Pisano made sculpture in wood, including the present Angel of the Annunciation. He was among the first sculptors to express a change in the artistic conception of sculpture in Pisa c. 1370 from the noble, distant character of marble sculpture to the more realistic, appealing, and responsive figures in painted wood.
This statue would have formed an Annunciation group with a Virgin Mary. The Gabriel is very damaged and has lost his wings, halo and original paint. Like other wooden statuary of its time, it would have been brightly painted with different colors and had gilded hair. Restoration in 1959 revealed traces of the original paint pattern on the robe.
The Virgin Annunciate is now in the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso, Pontedera.
