The Gothic Baptistery was built between 1338 and 1360. Vasari claimed that it was designed by Andrea Pisano but there is no proof about that. However, in the lunette of the main door of the Baptistery the statues of the Virgin and Child between Sts John the Baptist and Peter are traditionally attributed to Nino and Tommaso, sons of Andrea Pisano. The architrave is divided in four bas-reliefs depicting stories of St John's life.
