In 1893, Pissarro began a series of urban views of Paris under different conditions - morning sun, mist and rain - as seen from his hotel room. In these paintings Pissarro explores the chromatic and volumetric variations which light and weather produce on objects and atmosphere. The artist uses a uniform light which is typical of his work, and envelops the scene in a silvery tonality appropriate to a moderately cloudy day. The streets are wet with rain and the air is filled with dampness.
