Count Georg von Löwenstein (right wing)

c. 1457
Distemper on wood, 31 x 23 cm
Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg

This panel is the right wing of a diptych, which is called Löwenstein diptych after the donor portrayed on this panel. Count Georg von Löwenstein was the canon of Bamberg. The half-length portrait shows the elderly donor holding his thumb in a devotional book, apparently ruminating on its meaning. He rests on a parapet in strong light against a dark background.

On the left wing of the diptych Christ is depicted as the Man of Sorrows.
