A Yard in Moscow

Oil on canvas, 65 x 80 cm
State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow

The emphasis of this picture lies not on the perfectly presentable home of well-to-do people but on the bare grass and sandy paths in the yard and particularly the wonderful light flooding the whole scene. It is an intimate landscape of the kind the Barbizon artists had established, only much brighter, its colours more intense.
