Porcellis specialised in marine paintings, or seascapes. While the traditional seascape was usually a 'portrait' of a certain ship or an 'account' of a naval battle, Porcellis concentrated mainly on the rendering of light and atmosphere. The ships play a subordinate role.
Porcellis used only a few colours, mostly shades of grey-blue and brown. He was thus one of the first practitioners of the 'tonal' manner of painting popular in the 1630s both in landscapes and still lifes.
