The attribution of this painting is debated. Due to some similarities it was considered for centuries to be the companion-piece of the Portrait of a Musician and both were attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The debate started at the end of the 19th century and the opinions differ even now. The majority agrees in the attribution to de Predis, however, there are others maintaining the attribution to Leonardo, or at least his contribution.
The identity of the sitter is unknown. The large number of assumptions identifying her as Beatrice d'Este, Bianca Maria Sforza, Isabel of Aragon, Domitilla Trivulzio etc. cannot be proved.
