PUGIN, English family of artists, of French descent

Augustus Charles Pugin (1769-1832) came to England c. 1792 and had a successful and wide-ranging career; however, his son Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852), the Gothic Revival architect, is the best-known member of the family. The latter's sons Edward Welby Pugin (1834-1875), Peter Paul Pugin (1851-1904) and Cuthbert Welby Pugin (1840-1928), and his grandsons Sebastian Pugin Powell (1866-1949) and Charles Henry Cuthbert Purcell (1874-1958), were all architects.
