QUERCIA, Jacopo della
(b. ca. 1367, Quercia Grossa, d. 1438, Siena)

Tomb of Ilaria del Carretto

1406-13
Marble, 204 x 69 cm (effigy)
Cathedral of San Martino, Lucca

A position closely comparable to Ghiberti's in Florence is occupied by his competitor and the greatest of Sienese sculptors, Jacopo della Quercia. Quercia's earliest undisputed work, the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto in Lucca, reveals an extremely sensitive style which is still firmly embedded in the late courtois tradition.
