Trenta Altar: Virgin and Child

1412-22
Marble
San Frediano, Lucca

The Trenta Altar is basically a conservative sacra conversazione with the Virgin and Child enthroned against a cloth of honour in a shallow central niche.

The Virgin, bolder and more developed than the Virgin of the Fonte Gaia, is preternaturally tall and swathed in profuse drapery. In this figure the robe which clings so closely round Ilaria del Carretto seems to have assumed an existence of its own, rolling and swelling like the surface of a sea.
