At the base of the altar is an elaborate historiated predella with scenes from the Lives of the Saints enframing a central Lamentation. The picture shows a scene from the life of St Richard: Death of St Richard. St Richard of Lucca led his family on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land but died en route in Lucca, where he was buried in the church of San Frediano.
