In 1425 Jacopo della Quercia accepted a commission for a colossal project of decorating the main door of the church of San Petronio in Bologna, a project that continued well into the sixteenth century. In the reliefs for the portal the lingering lyricism of the Sienese style is transformed by the expressive animation and the heroically proportioned bodies of the figures.
