The five scenes on the left lateral support of the main portal of San Petronio are, from top to bottom, the (i) Creation of Adam, (ii) Creation of Eve, (iii) Original Sin, (iv) Expulsion from Paradise and (v) Work of the Ancestors.
The picture shows the relief of Expulsion from Paradise. This relief takes its basic format from the Fonte Gaia, except that, instead of obediently striding forward, Adam now turns his head and raises his arms in defiance, and a mountain closes off the space to the right, further reducing any sense of depth. Here Jacopo again avoided the Florentine science of perspective.
