Carl Rahl was an Austrian painter who had an important impact on Viennese art in the mid-nineteenth century which aspired to instigate a new monumental art after the intimacy of the Nazarenes. This canvas is a sketch for a large composition which recalls the battle pieces by Giulio Romano.
