Paintings during the stay in Florence (1505-09)
by RAFFAELLO

In 1505 Raphael was in Florence. The most notable artists active at the time were Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti and the Dominican friar, Fra Bartolomeo. Each of these artists had developed a different style of painting, but all were involved in a search for figurative elements which surpassed the Quattrocento models and for an expressive language in which colour was more unified and space was freer. Raphael became involved in this search. Fra Bartolomeo seems to be the artist to whom Raphael turned most of his attention at this time.
