The Battle at Pons Milvius (detail)

1520-24
Fresco
Sala di Constantino, Palazzi Pontifici, Vatican

Raphael's composition for this painting incorporates motifs from numerous antique models: reliefs from the Arch of Constantine, Trajan's Column, and battle scenes on Roman sarcophagi. In this scene Raphael and Giulio Romano designed a panorama of swelling masses, assembled into battling groups in which individual fates catch our eye in turn.
