RAFFAELLO Sanzio
(b. 1483, Urbino, d. 1520, Roma)

Portrait of a Youth

c. 1509-11
Oil on board, 59 x 75 cm
Czartoryski Museum, Cracow

Circa 1800 it was believed that the painting is self-portrait. Later attempts were made to identify the sitter as Duke of Urbino, Francesco Maria della Rovere, or the Duke of Mantua Federigo Gonzaga, or even it was suggested that it might be the portrait of a woman. The painting was looted by the Germans in 1939 and disappeared.
