RAFFAELLO Sanzio
(b. 1483, Urbino, d. 1520, Roma)

St John the Baptist in the Wilderness

c. 1518
Oil on canvas, 165 x 147 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

This painting was carried out to Raphael's design by workshop assistants. The brown rocky background and the modelling of the figures show the strong influence of Leonardo. The quality of the light is not typical of Leonardo, though; it does not surround the figures softly but models them sharply.

From 1589 the painting is in the Galleria degli Uffizi. It was restored in 1989.
