(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Old Woman Praying

1629-30
Oil on copper, 16 x 12 cm
Residenzgalerie, Salzburg

Catalogue number: Bredius 64.

For this painting representing an old woman wearing a red headscarf and wrapped in a fur cape, Rembrandt chose copper as the support. He used gold leaf as the ground to heighten the luminous effect. The likeness is presumed to be that of Rembrandt's mother Cornelia Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbroek.
