REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Portrait of a Man

1632
Oil on wood, 76 x 52 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Catalogue number: Bredius 160.

In his first two years in Amsterdam, in 1632 and 1633, Rembrandt produced a variety of formal portraits in nearly every format then current. Even the newly fashionable oval support was treated by the artist as an experimental form, as in the case of the present portrait of an unidentified man.
