REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Portrait of a Lady with an Ostrich-Feather Fan

1656-58
Oil on canvas, 100 x 83 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington

Catalogue number: Bredius 402.

This portrait is the companion piece to the Portrait of a Gentleman with a Tall Hat and Gloves in the same museum. The unknown lady, lost in the world of her private thoughts, seems unaware of her surroundings and the spectator finds himself mysteriously participating in her contemplative mood. Note the consummate skill with which the form and texture of the hands and ostrich-feather fan have been rendered.
