REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Portrait of the Artist's Son Titus

1663
Oil on canvas, 83 x 64 cm
Dulwich Picture Gallery, London

Catalogue number: Bredius 289.

This painting shows Rembrandt's late style, in which he did not define each form sharply and clearly, but painted with broad and suggestive brushstrokes. This gives his works from the late period a mysterious and poetic character.

Titus died in 1668. We may assume that he was quite ill at the end of his life and this seems to be reflected in this portrait.
