The holy human Rembrandt came closest to worshiping was the Virgin. The Reformation dethroned her as Queen of Heaven, but maintained the exceptional status of the mother of God as a "model of faith." The Mennonites, especially the Waterland community with which Rembrandt had closest contact, cultivated a particular devotion for the Virgin. The etchings by Rembrandt that clearly lift her above the mortal realm may have been inspired by Rembrandt's contacts with Waterland Mennonites.
