Medea, or the Marriage of Jason and Creusa

The story of Medea is described variously by ancient authors. In the seventeenth century, Netherlandish artists who depicted Medea usually drew upon Ovid's metamorphoses. However, less familiar sources were also consulted, and modern versions composed, Thus Rembrandt's large etching of 1648, Medea or the Marriage of Jason and Creusa was made as a frontispiece to a version of Medea written and published that year by his patron Jan Six.

The signature and the verses at the bottom appear only in the fourth state.
