REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Landscape with trees, farm buildings and a tower

c. 1650
Etching and drypoint, fourth state of four, 120 x 319 mm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

Catalogue number: Bartsch 223.

This etching underwent a remarkable transformation between the second and third states. The tower in the background has been identified as the House with the Tower, a property west of Amsterdam, belonging to the tax collector Joannes Wtenbogaert. The dome and spire that were still there in the first state, are now removed leaving only a square tower.
