Portrait of Johannes Wtenbogaert

Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644) was a Remonstrant preacher, an important man who, after the death of Jacobus Arminius, embodied the "lenient" movement of Dutch Calvinism. The etching, showing the sitter in his study at a table piled with books, is provided with a four-line Latin quatrain by Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), another Remonstrant.

Two years earlier Rembrandt painted a portrait of Wtenbogaert, a private commission.
