REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Departure of Rebecca from her parents' home

c. 1637
Brown ink and wash, 185 x 306 mm
Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart

Catalogue number: Benesch 147.

The inscription on the attached strip by Rembrandt's hand reads: "This should be joined with many neighbours who [come to] see this high [-born] bride take her leave." This inscription, with its critical comment on the composition, makes the drawing seem like an assignment to an advanced pupil.
