REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

The Amstel from the bulwark adjoining the Blauwbrug

1649-50
Pen and black and brown ink, brush and wash, 89 x 185 mm
National Gallery of Art, Washington

Not in the Benesch catalogue.

The closest spot on the Amstel from Rembrandt's house was where the Blauwbrug (Blue Bridge) now crosses the river. In the seventeenth century, there was a bridge on the same location. The present view is taken from the bulwark adjoining the bridge.
