Catalogue number: Benesch 152. In spite of being a Protestant, Rembrandt honoured apostles, evangelists, prophets and, especially, Mary the mother of God. This drawing contains studies of a Mater Dolorosa and other mourners beneath the Cross. The inscription reads: A devout treasure to be preserved in a tender heart to comfort her compassionate soul. | |
