Rembrandt's teaching method involved classic exercises such as copying from prints, drawing from the model and accompanying the master on walks in the country. All were heavily dependent on drawing. In addition to the twenty-five albums and boxes of Rembrandt's own drawings, another pedagogical tool was the pupil drawing corrected by the master. The present drawing is an example: the heavy lines in reed pen are taken to be Rembrandt's way of showing a somewhat timid pupil, probably Constantijn van Remesse, where he should give it all he's got.
