REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Old Woman Cutting Her Nails

1650s
Oil on canvas, 126 x 102 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This painting is not included in the Bredius catalogue.

Until the 1920s this painting was celebrated as a mature work by Rembrandt. Since then the authorship is debated, but it is generally thought that the painting was executed within the immediate circle of Nicolaes Maes in Dordrecht during the 1650s. A plausible attribution is to Maes's colleague Abraham van Dijck (c. 1635-1680).
