Apotheosis of Hercules

Palazzo Marucelli-Fenzi, Florence

The Apotheosis of Hercules, depicted in the centre of the ceiling, was one of the most popular subjects for the decoration in baroque ballrooms. The quintessential virtuous hero represented the prototype of the mortal whose virtue and merit are rewarded by the gods with immortality.
