RICCI, Sebastiano
(b. 1659, Belluno, d. 1734, Venezia)

Amor Virtutis Casts Ignorantia down into Orcus

1706-07
Oil on canvas
Palazzo Marucelli-Fenzi, Florence

This oil painting is on the ceiling of one of the rooms adjacent to the Sala d'Ercole on the ground floor of the Palazzo Marucelli-Fenzi. It depicts Amor Virtutis, Nobilitas, Honor, and the Arts Cast Ignorantia down into Orcus. The painting shows Ricci's fondness for falling young bodies in bold foreshortening. The plunging figure can be identified from his ass's ears as Ignorantia.
