Embrace between Sts Francis and Dominic

1493-95
Glazed terracotta, 140 x 270 cm
Spedale di San Paolo, Florence

The Hospital of San Paolo in Florence is located in a complex dating back to the thirteenth century when the hospital was founded. It was used as shelter for the ill, the poor and mendicants. In 1221 the Dominican friars met here before moving to the convent of Santa Maria Novella. It is said that the meeting between Saint Francis and Saint Dominic took place in the hospital premises and the event is shown in a glazed terracotta lunette by Andrea della Robbia. The relief symbolizes the union of the Franciscans and Dominicans.
