ROBBIA, Giovanni della
(b. 1469, Firenze, d. 1529, Firenze)

Bust of a Young Woman

1490s
Glazed terracotta, diameter 95 cm
Private collection

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the della Robbia family produced sculpture to adorn churches and the façades of Florentine palazzi, and for private devotion. The present tondo, containing the bust of a young woman, encircled by a copious fruiting and flowering wreath, was executed for the Palazzo Davanzati in Florence. It was suggested by some scjolars that Girolamo, Giovanni's brother, may have been the author of the abundant wreath of leaves, pinecones, fruit, lizards and frogs surrounding this bust.
