ROBBIA, Giovanni della
(b. 1469, Firenze, d. 1529, Firenze)

Judith

-
Glazed terracotta, height 60 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

The brown glaze used on this statue was applied to get an impression of bronze. Heroic statues of Judith and David in bronze were executed for the Medicis by the greatest masters: Donatello, Verrocchio, Michelangelo. The smaller terracotta statues by the Robbia workshop were for the lower classes, for the citizens.
