Candelabrum-Bearing Angel

1448
Glazed terracotta, 84 x 57 cm
Duomo, Florence

Two candelabrum-bearing angels in white glazed terracotta were commissioned by the Cathedral Vestry Board for the altar of the Communion Chapel in the Florence Cathedral. The robust sculptural quality of the kneeling youths, originally gilded or painted and equipped with wooden wings, had an influence of the young Michelangelo when he was preparing his Angel with Candlestick for the Tomb of St Dominic in Bologna.
