ROSSELLINO, Antonio
(b. 1427, Settignano, d. 1479, Firenze)

Giovanni Chellini

1456
Marble, height 51 cm
Victoria and Albert Museum, London

This bust is the first work which we definitely know is by Antonio Rossellino. The bust is clad in an evenly folded coat whose collar sets the head off against the chest. His face shows all the features o the elderly doctor and philosopher at the height of his wisdom. There are bags underneath his eyes, which are set in hollows below strong eyebrows. His hollow cheeks and the folds of skin in his neck emphasize his nose and the firm chin underneath a right-lipped smile.
