ROSSELLINO, Antonio
(b. 1427, Settignano, d. 1479, Firenze)

Tomb of the Cardinal of Portugal (detail)

1461-66
White and coloured marble
San Miniato al Monte, Florence

The background is red marble that was once covered with gilded designs to resemble a brocaded cloth of honour. Against this background two angels seem to fly in, holding a roundel, a circular marble wreath. The roundel with the Virgin and Child is supported by the flying angels. The Virgin, with light, fluttering drapery on her right shoulder, leans forward and gazes tenderly at the effigy. The angels and the Virgin and Child are sharply carved, animated figures.
