RYCKAERT (RIJCKAERT), Flemish family of painters

The members of this Flemish family of painters were active in Antwerp. David Ryckaert I (David the Elder, 1560-1607) was a painter. His two sons, David Ryckaert II (1586–1642) and Maerten Ryckaert (1587-1633) were also painters. Maerten's work was characterized by rocky forest landscapes, often with waterfalls, ruins, and architecture. David Ryckaert III (David the Younger, 1612-1661) was taught by his father David Ryckaert II. In 1636 David III became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke, and in 1652 he was appointed Dean of the Guild. He is noted for large and often humorous genre pictures of farmers and landlords, and powerfully coloured still-lifes. His brother-in-law, Gonzales Coques, was his pupil.
